5 Stars Outstanding software
I purchased this product for use with my Pioneer BSR-203 Blu-ray writer/player. Regretfully, my computer will not play Blu-ray discs though I did use it successfully and easily with DVD and CD discs.

5 Stars So far, so good…
Running this on a home theater PC platform, playing Blu-Ray content through an ATI HD2600 XT graphics card, thus far without incident. Software updates were available, and were necessary in my particular case. No difficulties were experienced in the updating process, however.

Had some limited experience with the earlier PowerDVD 8 Ultra, which seemed fine for “classic” BD discs, but sometimes struggled with recent titles. In all fairness to CyberLink, I believe these difficulties are related to the either the “special features” that studios feel compelled to roll into a given disc’s content, or various, evolving DRM schemes. Would buy again.

This is a very good product although the user interface is dated and somewhat lacking with respect to window candy, menu styles, and menu customization. The software focuses on the technical aspect of citation management and formatting and performs that job extremely well covering very many citation formats. Importing from web sites works very well from online databases although there are times that the coding of the authors’ names is backwards i.e. first name comes out as last name. This package also comes with a PDA database application so you can carry it with you and sync later to your computer. User beware that one should check references formatted for correct capitalization, etc. as it cannot do everything without some human checking. The user should be familiar with the formatting method and refer to a text for the correct rules.

Formats can be created from the existing list of reference styles to make reference formats such as APA annotated bibliographies and annotated references. The software allows logical storage of references through custom groups. This is an excellent tool for researchers from high school on up through doctoral programs as it has many tools that will grow with you as you progress as a researcher. I use it as my reference note taker for my doctoral research and I wish I knew about this years ago as it would have saved me a lot of time.

The only issue that I have is that it interfaces with Word and is very slow to start when Word is activated and closes when you leave Word. There may be a fix for this but I have not investigated. This is a minor issue as my time spent writing and referencing is way more than the start up time factor.

The bottom line, if you are into research, this is an excellent package for reference management and citation insertion into documents. It has wide-spread linkages with most online databases such as EBSCOHost and ProQuest and to many library links built into the software. It allows for attachment of documents into the database either through insertion into the database or references to locations on your hard-drive. At this point, I can not do without its usefulness.

1 Star EndNote 2 has serious problems
EndNote has not resolved a problem with a file that is generated when it is installed and used: “cwyw.dot”. If you read the user’s forum on the EndNote site you will see numerous comments about having problems with the “cwyw.dot” files. It can cause your MSWord to hang-up and just freeze. The corrections that EndNote lists on its website are not adequate fixes.

Be careful about purchasing software that has not been fully engineered. This is one of them.

5 Stars Makes research and Publishing a Breeze
Version X2 was a bit slow until the recent patch. Now it is fast.

It takes a short while to learn all of the features, but well worth it.

Customer service is excellent (rare these days)!

You can get bibilographical information from your university library (or Library of Congress, or one of hundreds of other sources) online and create an organized data base of all your resources.

You can then arrange your books and articles and other publications according to your groups that you set up: (e.g. Available in Library, PDF file Available, Need to order via Interlink Library System, etc) so that you can make your research work as efficient as possible.

You can then automatical insert citations according to your prefered style (Chicago 15th, MLA, or one of thousands of others) and automatically create a bibliography, saving many hours of tedious labor.

Well worth the price!

4 Stars Easy to use, intuitive and broad video format coverage
I got familiar with this product since version 5 when it was bundled in a pack with a camcorder that I bought. I was pretty satisfied on the easiness of using the product - few clicks and you have your movie processed. The reason I upgraded to PowerDirector 7 Ultra was that I bought a camera (Lumix TZ-7) that shoots AVCHD format and the included video editing software with the camera is not as powerful as PowerDirector.

What I like.

This software is very easy to use, intuitive, has many powerful features that enable you to produce an impressive (not professional) videos easily just for few clicks and burn on DVDs or Blue-Ray. This software supports if not all alsmost all video recording formats. What I want from a video editing software is to spend as little time as possible editing my videos and get good video clip at the end. PowerDirector 7 Ultra has Magic tools that automaticaly does this for you

What I would liked to be improved.

Sometimes this software crashes.

People complain about the customer support. I cannot say anything about that because I never needed them.

1 Star Ultra disappointment
I purchased this product based on so called experts ratings. After three months, I have not been able to burn a quality Blu Ray disk. I’ve been in contact with software support and have tried everything they suggested. After wasting five 25G disks, the product still continually shuts down (sometimes during burning process). When I was able to burn a Blu Ray disk, the quality was very poor. The Blu ray disk had radom pixels throught the video.

1 Star Beware for AVCHD 4.1 camera users
This product was highly reviewed for video editing. In fact, on many sites, this product was ranked higher than Sony Vegas, Adobe Elements, and a multitude of others.

Being cautious, I downloaded the evaluation version (free from Cyberlink’s website). This free evaluation does not allow for HD content burning, but was enough to play with the look and feel of the product. It seemed like a reasonable product, so I bought a copy from Amazon.

This product was advertised as supporting AVCHD. Buyer beware that there are different versions of AVCHD.

Very Basic Summary:

AVCHD 4.0 = up to 17 Mbit/s transport stream.

AVCHD 4.1 = up to 24 Mbit/s transport stream.

Now I have a Cannon Vixia HF S10. This supports 24 Mbit/s video output/quality, and basically conforms to the AVCHD 4.1 specification. My hope was to buy PowerDirector 7 Ultra and use it’s advertised AVCHD and BD (blue ray disk) burning support to create HD home movies for the family.

After playing with the product for a couple of days, it became very obvious that the product did not support AVCHD 4.1. Again this was not documented anywhere (online, in the user manual, etc.). So what does this mean? All video captured with my camera is down sampled to 17 Mbit/s. This wouldn’t be so bad, if the stream was a steady 17; however, the codec PowerDirector uses does not work this way. My 22-24 Mbit/s source video (which looks great by the way), is down sampled to 12-14 Mbit/s. This results in very grainy and choppy looking video.

This in itself would have put the product at 2-3 stars. I’m giving Cyberlink’s PowerDirector 7 Ultra a one star, because of the following.

Before writing off the product as unusable, I contacted their customer support about the issue. Their turn around on posted issues is ~1 week. My first post was just a general question about how to preserve my video quality, and described the drop in quality from the 24Mbit/s source. The response I got was a canned answer to try a very basic burn. Being patient, I tried this and provided feedback that this didn’t work. Realizing the quality of tech support at this point, I changed my tactic to ask directly if the tool supported AVCHD 4.1. It took three exchanges (so three more weeks go by), before they answered my direct question, and stated the following:

“In regards to your concern related with the droping of video quality we would like to inform that PowerDirector doesn’t support H264 Main-Profile, Level 4.1 = 24Mbps max.”

Now that I have confirmation from them that this product does not support my needs, I start the process of requesting a return and refund of the product. I then get sent between Digital River, and Cyberlink customer support three times, each stating that the other group is responsible for the refund and return of the product.

I’ll be contacting Amazon shortly, and see what they might be able to do for me, but my hopes are not that high.

Conclusion:

If you have a camcorder which does not support AVCHD 4.1, and you do not mind dealing with tech support for multiple weeks for simple direct questions (or don’t need tech support at all), then this product is probably great. Otherwise, I would suggest looking elsewhere.

I bought this software .Its the first time I have ever experianced this ghastly service.The program constantly crashes and is slower than any program I’ve ever owned.The after tech service is non existant. The just shuffle you around and never solve anything.I can’t tell you what to buy but stay away from this or any of thier software.Be afraid be very afraid!

First, the Manual (PDF format) that comes with the software contains information and step - by - step instructions for non existing abilities. You are left wondering why you can not follow its simple instructions. Did I install it wrong? NOPE! This is a cut down version of what is in the manual.

Now that you realize that it ONLY makes barcodes you are left looking at the CD cover wondering why it shows the ability to add text - sorry no other text than the letters and numbers with your barcode.

Second, three steps will get you (maybe) a label to work on. Scroll down in the manual past all the database nonesense and it is only slightly helpful in getting an actual barcode created.

Third, You - yes you! must know what type of barcode you will need. Do your research as there is nothing to help you in this area and there are many types of barcodes and they are all used for different industries, etc.

Fourth, the barcode can only be moved around one space at a time. Know this and you will get along with it fine. There is not an ability to simply place it where you want on the label - no center and no justify. You will have to allow it to place it where it wants and then move it one space at a time to the location on the label that you wish it to be. Doesn’t take that long though for most labels.

Fifth, clicking on the “Insert Field” drop down menu at the top of the page causes the software to crash. You will have to close the program and restart the program. SO DON’T DO IT! :>

So the good parts… it is CHEAP and makes nice barcodes. Once you get the hang of making your first one it is not to bad (but not 1 - 2 - 3). Printed easy enough. Just like printing in Word or any other document. Changing the font and color to print the barcode was easy. All in all it is worth the cheap price. Just don’t expect the moon and the stars…
